  • What is the Case-Based Discussion (CBD) Service?

The Case-Based Discussion Service at (Pre)Meducated is designed to enhance your understanding and retention of high-yield content specifically tailored for USMLE and COMLEX preparation. This service involves collaborative learning through in-depth discussions of clinical cases.

How does the Case-Based Discussion Service work?

Our service involves small group sessions where participants work through high-yield, system-based cases. The key features include:

System-Based Cases: We focus on the highest yield cases for each system to ensure comprehensive coverage of essential topics.

Twice Weekly Meetings: Groups meet twice a week for 2 hours to discuss and analyze a few high-yield cases. We focus on the mechanisms of action of pathology, comprehension of medical physiology, and mastery of micro, pharm, and other necessary basic medical sciences.

Duration: The groups last for 1 to 12 months, allowing thorough coverage and understanding of the material.

Pre-Session Survey: Participants complete a survey before the first meeting to provide information about their learning preferences, including whether they are comfortable being called on during discussions.

Homework Assignments: To maximize learning, participants may be given homework, such as preparing presentations on specific mechanisms or concepts related to the cases discussed. This is only done with your consent in the pre-session survey.

What is the role of the facilitator in the Case-Based Discussion Service?

As the facilitator of the Case-Based Discussion Service, my primary role is to guide and support participants through an interactive and engaging learning experience. Outside of (Pre)Meducated, I work as a med school professor who exclusively teaches preclinical medical students through this learning style. As such, I bring professional expertise to each session, which means I know how to maximize your learning and fun at each meeting.

Here’s what I will do for you as your CBD facilitator:

    Encouraging Critical Thinking:

I ask probing questions that prompt participants to think deeply about high-yield content and its application.

These questions are designed to stimulate discussion and encourage participants to consider different perspectives and solutions.

    Directing Conversations:

If the conversation veers off-topic, I gently steer it back to relevant high-yield material to maintain focus and maximize learning.

My goal is to ensure that discussions remain productive and centered on key concepts that are essential for USMLE and COMLEX preparation.

    Explaining Complex Topics:

When necessary, I provide clear and concise explanations of complex topics to ensure that all participants have a thorough understanding.

My explanations are tailored to the group’s needs, ensuring that everyone is on the same page.

    Promoting Active Learning:

The Case-Based Discussion approach transforms learning into a collaborative, active event, as opposed to passively reading textbook chapters or listening to lectures.

By fostering an environment where students work together, I make learning more interactive, which directly translates to enhanced material comprehension, retention, and enjoyment.

    Facilitating Collaboration:

I encourage students to work together to solve problems and understand concepts.

By promoting teamwork, I help students develop essential skills for collaborative practice in their future medical careers.

    Making Learning Fun and Engaging:

My approach is designed to make learning a fun, interactive experience. You will be learning along side peers also studying for the same exam. This is a judgement-free zone where raunchy jokes and the occasional weekend bar crawl story are encouraged. This isn't your average boring class, this is (Pre)Meducated CBD. We have fun AND learn here.

    Who is this service for?

The Case-Based Discussion Service is ideal for medical students preparing for the USMLE or COMLEX exams who prefer an interactive, discussion-based learning approach.

How many systems will be covered?

We aim to cover every major system at least once during the duration of the group sessions to ensure a comprehensive review of high-yield topics.

What is the group size for the discussions?

Groups are kept small to facilitate active participation and personalized attention, ensuring each participant can engage fully with the material and the group. Group sizes can fluctuate based on demand and what CBD package you opt for, but typically range from two to eight students.

What kind of cases will be discussed?

We select cases that are of the highest yield for USMLE and COMLEX preparation, focusing on essential topics and commonly tested material. Depending on what length of CBD you opt for, we will cover every major organ system!

What if I am not comfortable being called on during discussions?

Our pre-session survey allows you to specify your comfort level with being called on during discussions. We strive to create a supportive and comfortable learning environment for all participants.

What are the benefits of participating in the Case-Based Discussion Service?

Enhanced Understanding: Deepen your knowledge of high-yield topics through interactive discussions.

Active Learning: Engage actively with the material, which has been shown to improve retention and understanding.

Collaborative Environment: Benefit from the insights and perspectives of your peers in a collaborative setting.

Personalized Attention: Small group sizes ensure that you receive personalized attention and support.
